Through the years, Raxco Software has been fortunate enough to be in a position to give back some to its community. While we are not the largest of companies, so our scale is smaller, we do believe in supporting causes where we can. Typically, the causes we have taken on have a direct connection to one or more employees at Raxco. Thus, our giving to the Ronald McDonald House of Washington, DC, where there is a room with Raxco’s name on it, the Habitat for Humanity, the Tourette Syndrome Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Instituto Mundo Libre, to name a few.
Another is the ALS Association. Often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
On a personal note, let me tell you a little about Wayne Fuller. I worked with Wayne over 15 years ago. Over the years, he was a prominent figure in the DC-area technology community, heading up the operations, technical and marketing efforts of a few hundred-million dollar companies. Full of life and passion for life, Wayne is in many ways a typical Washingonian…active in his community, big Redskins fan, coached his kids’ basketball teams, etc. We debated which of us had the better jump shot. He still has all that enthusiasm and love of life.
Unfortunately, he was also hit with ALS.
As noted above, the life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. Wayne told me this 7 years ago.
He likes to say now he is in his “extra innings.” And typical of him, he’s playing them all out. Which is why his DC-area group, Fuller Friends, has been at the top of the heap when it comes to raising money to fight ALS for the last several years, with hundreds of members.
His fight goes on. Here is some of his story, and how you can join him and Raxco Software in fighting ALS: http://bit.ly/OFgQ15.
