Schengen Agreement Purpose

In December 1996, two non-EU states, Norway and Iceland, signed an association agreement with the countries that signed the Schengen accession agreement. Although this agreement never entered into force, the two countries were part of the Schengen area following similar agreements with the EU. [9] The Schengen Agreement itself was not signed by non-EU states. [10] In 2009, Switzerland officially concluded its accession to the Schengen area by adopting an association agreement by referendum in 2005. [11] The two Schengen agreements have been a major step forward for transport in Europe. Queues would often be one kilometre long and wait for border patrols to sign them, but the agreements helped to stop them. Today, people can enter neighbouring countries without having to present any form of identity card. Of course, airlines always require you to show it for security reasons, but border controls are much easier to navigate and don`t even exist in some cases. A short-stay visa costs 60 euros (46 USD; 66 USD) but only 35 euros for Russians, Ukrainians and citizens of some other countries, as part of the facilitation of issuing visas. The Schengen Agreement required some mutual trust in immigration and asylum policies, as new residents of one country would then have access to all other Schengen members without a visa and without a passport.

However, the harmonisation of immigration policy is in principle the responsibility of the EU institutions and not of The Schengen itself. In another case, the visa application resulting from the Schengen agreements corresponds to any visa procedure. You apply, send your passport and then receive a stamp if you are approved. However, they must meet certain criteria and requirements in order to qualify for a visa under the Schengen Agreement. One of the most remarkable requirements is Schengen visa insurance. Although these measures are already present in the EU, the new agreement establishes national contact points for the coordination of these activities, which could facilitate their increased use.
