PerfectDisk 11 -- Gearing up for Beta

Monday, November 9, 2009 by Joe Abusamra

UPDATE: It goes to 11 -- in 11 days

Our development staff has been making some final improvements to Version 11, including the incorporation of some new enhancements, all with an eye toward making what we believe to be the best defrag software even better.

We've expanded our Alpha test and incorporated feedback from additional testers. Additional tweaks have been made to the new analysis phase of PerfectDisk, allowing for some really good results which lead to a much faster analyze and fast defrag. Some of the performance improvements will be particularly noticeable on large drives. In some cases we're seeing improvements of several hundred percent. We're now also incorporating new graphics into the product and will begin the beta test in just a few weeks.

With PerfectDisk 11, we plan to release all the client versions together with the Enterprise Console. This will be particularly beneficial to our corporate customers, especially with all the new virtualization functionality.

Our latest disk defragmenter program -- the PerfectDisk 11 beta test comes soon.

Comments for PerfectDisk 11 -- Gearing up for Beta

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 by Irakli:
I hope faster analyse and defrag in PD11 is not achieved by making PD less thorough w.r.t. file defrag and free space consolidation.
Tuesday, November 10, 2009 by Joe Abusamra:
Thanks for the comment, Irakli. Legitimate concern and absolutely not; we believe that PerfectDisk's thoroughness with regards to files and complete free space consolidation are important key differentiators, and they are not being compromised at all with PerfectDisk 11. Thanks, Joe

I'd love for PD11 to have an option for a special boot time defrag that is a 100% comprehensive defrag of all files, folders and free space using the Smartplacment file organization. After one defrag there are still arbitrary fragments left over that it decides would be too much time to defrag and little benefit, but it would be nice to have an option for a total comprehensive defrag

I use also Speeddisk. By installing PD11 the program told me that I need a higher version of Speeddisk. But when I try to get an update, I get the mention that I already used the very last version. So I had to removed Speeddisk first, before I could installed PD11. Greetings, Rob

I've been using perfect disk since it was version 9 (aka 2008). I've always had issues with it on my tb drives. they're full of large video files because i do a lot of video editing, I find that when i do any of the 3 defragment options, especially the comprehensive (even with the time between days set to 1 and 2 repespectively, it likes to move around complete files that are contiguous and move them into spots where other contiguous files are, and the space inbetween them are contiguous files.... therefore wasting time moving these massive files for no reason and when finally reaching these fragmented files sometimes leaving them fragmented (or are still being reported as fragmented, and this is taking into account the MFT/MFT Zone, and the end of platter markers) has this issue been brought to light, since up to this point v10 has this issue as well. Just thought (3 drives, western digital 1001FFALS's, and all are GTP/NTFS 16k/16k/4k clusters respectively)
Thursday, January 28, 2010 by Joe Abusamra:
Hi Johann, There is nothing specific in PD 11 to address this issue. What you can do is exclude files or folder paths that you'd like the enfgine to ignore; this would probably be the best approach. You can contact support@perfectdisk.com if you need help with this. Thanks, Joe

No bug with Windows 7. PD11 is not best than PD10.PD11 is just a litlle faster. I have not seen difference with options in smart placement.

Beta testing PD11 Pro Beta build 161 on Win 7 64-bit, 1 TB & 750 MB drives. Analyzing much faster, but the Estimated completion time info while defragmenting doesn't seem to work - it shows always completion within 1-5 minutes, irrespective the defrag status percentage. Space management graphics look interesting.

Hi I would really much like to test out the new beta of Perfectdisk 11 Have been using Diskkeeper for a few years, but switched to Perfectdisk, and havent regretted it :)
Tuesday, February 2, 2010 by Joe Abusamra:
Hi Mariusz and Kosmos, Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, we're just windong things down now so aren't able to take in any new people. But the good news is we're getting closer to the actual release. Thanks, Joe
Tuesday, February 2, 2010 by Joe Abusamra:
Hi Ulf, Thanks for your comment. Yes, that is a tricky thing and we are still loooking at it. We may end up removing it for now until we can get it more accurate. Thanks, Joe
Saturday, February 6, 2010 by Ron McLendon:
PD seems to analyze much slower than previous versions, yet the actual defrag seems about the same. Duplicate file finder needs a lot of work. It thinks duplicate file names are names that are close or similar. For example, it thinks Filename123.txt is the same as Filenameabc123.txt

you can always download the beta 162 or newer from all over the place. i hate to recc that but if they are done and you want to test it at least this way you can. just be sure its a legit site and to scan with a good av first.

So will the update be free to those who purchased PD10 less than 1 year ago?
Monday, February 22, 2010 by Joe Abusamra:
Hi Quentin, If PD 10 was purchased a year ago or less along with Upgrade Protection, you would receive it free. Thanks, Joe

To improve the interface, maybe a "beeing executed" blocks can be added to the legend field, so, we can see the blocks that are beeing moved moving in real time. Thanks.

Still using PD7 and it works gr8 on 50 PC's in our dept. Why still on an older version? Because all vesion of PD after v7 crashed with Kerio personal firewall 2.0.15 (a really good firewall BTW). Your tech support blames the firewall driver. Well why did it work in v7 or prior and then suddenly broke in v8+. I hope v11 has it fixed (I doubt it, but have my fingers crossed).
Wednesday, March 3, 2010 by Joe Abusamra:
Hi Mike, You're using a VERY old version of Kerio. Kerio updated their driver in newer versions and it is that updated driver that causes the issue. Thanks, Joe

Looks like a nice product but ........perhaps V11 will be better for Windows Home Server. I downloaded the trial V10 release 4 days ago and have been running it flat out ever since in an attempt to find a product that can recover and keep the performance of my WHS good. First passes on the 3 x 1.5TB drives were horrendously slow (28 hours worse case on one drive - others 16-20 hrs) but the results look impressive - according to Perfectdisk statistics anyway - but to be honest I don't believe some of the stats - especially the used CPU usage. On a 4-core machine, with ~25% utilisation throughout the course of the defrag (and little else going on) a 16+ hour job reports CPU utilisation of

Hi Daniel, Thanks for the comment. A couple of WHS-dedicated sites I might check out for opinion and other user feedback are the WeGotServed and MSWHS blogs. I can only tell you to do your own testing on your machines. We have thousands of WHS users with large drives, and HP partnered with us after extensive testing. I can also tell you -- PD is I/O intensive but CPU usage is very low. It has a lot to write,so it is cranking away on the I/O, but CPU should always remain low. Thanks, Joe
