An SDelete alternative for recovering disk space from thin-provisioned disks

Overprovisioning is a common issue in data centers due to thin provisioning. While thin provisioning saves space, there is a performance hit and also an increase in the probability of running out of space in the storage group.
 
When blowing out space in a thin-[provisioned virtual disk, many IT people turn to the free SDelete (Secure Delete) command-line utility. SDelete deletes existing files and erases any file data that exists in the unallocated portions of a disk (including files that you have already deleted or encrypted). With SDelete, you can also overwrite the contents of free space on your disk.

Fragmentation prevention — the next generation

Years ago, Raxco Software obtained a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a disk optimization strategy we all know as SMARTPlacement. SMARTPlacement organizes the files on a drive according to a user’s unique usage patterns. The result is a drive that is not only defragmented, but is optimized for the user. We know there are options out there to defrag a computer other than PerfectDisk. Now, when you just want to defrag a file (or files) rather than an entire drive, or defrag metadata, or defrag Exchange, or defrag SQL, there are fewer options. Christopher Columbus and disk defrag

Today, many are celebrating Christopher Columbus Day here in the United States. Those celebrating the day may not be contemplating what Columbus did, but they at least had a day off from work or school, and a long weekend. Despite popular lore, Columbus did not discover America, even if you take into account Native Americans. Nor did he come up with the notion that the world is not flat, although many think he did.
